Top Ten Fun Relationship Tips (Yes, Sex is mentioned–Twice!)

By Dana Tanaro Britt

We’ve all seen those lists of tips to keep your relationship strong: picnics in the living room after the kids are asleep—I ask you who does this when the kids are small?? After those adorable wee beasties were abed, the picnic in this house was a Little Debbie cake followed by some shared zzzzs on the couch! And the sexy notes slipped into lunchboxes suggestion? As if he didn’t fix his own lunch while I groped about for my consciousness—likely found in the bottom of my tea mug an hour after he left?

All jokes aside, it can be a challenge to stay connected as US amid the chaos of all the other personas we take on in life, leaving our spouse to reap what’s left of us—which isn’t much, truth be told.

Here are a few good tips you can use to make your marriage top priority instead of last resort:

  1. Watch a TV show together—some couples really have to compromise to find one, for others it’s more about making the time to put other things aside for the duration of the tv show.
  2.  Kiss hello and goodbye—make it a point to look at your Spouse as you kiss hello or goodbye, every time. Little moments like this= magic.
  3.  Do one thing specifically for your Love today— you do things that benefit the family, but do something just for him. Cook or order a favored meal, pick up a cup of coffee/drink, ask what you can do just for him today. It’s a pretty good feeling to have your Spouse do something only for you.
  4.  Text/Call/Email a sexy message— as lame as that might sound to some, this is one of those amazing little magic tricks in marriage. Like the intentional, lingering hello & goodbye kiss, leaving a short message of desire stokes the fires.
  5.  Share dessert—that’s right, two forks, one plate—or even one fork, if you want to be oohlala & feed each other a bite or two. Anywhere, anytime.
  6.  Have Sex—yep, you read it right, it says ‘Have Sex.’ It’s rather astonishing to hear how many couples are lax about their sex lives. If you have to make a ‘sex date’ in order to ensure you’ve quality naked time this week, do it.
  7.  Touch—touches build and strengthen connections. A hand on his shoulder, a squeeze of her arm, a kiss on the cheek, a pat on the butt, resting your hand on his back…couples who touch often keep the fires burning bright amid daily life.
  8.  Pillow Talk—I know it’s a challenge to go to bed or wake at the same time every day, but take those chances to cuddle & talk as much as you can.
  9.  Compliment your Love—let him know you’re proud, mention a work thing, thank him for the drink he brought you, thank her for the laundry (cause that stuff is decidedly not on the fun list), tell him he’s handsome, tell her she’s pretty. Watch how your Spouse smiles, feeling appreciated is nice.
  10.  Enjoy quickies—yep, the sex thing again. By doing some of the other things listed here and keeping your connection alive, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to find the mood when there’s a moment for a quickie. Try it, you’ll see. I’ll never forget That Husband o’ Mine’s face the first time I suggested a quickie—priceless!

I think the key to any relationship is connection—all those tiny moments, small events are woven together to form a strong tapestry of love that is not easily torn.

After all, the best happily ever afters are those happening to everyday folks, one moment at a time.
