5 Star Amazon Review: “Amazing Series: Oh my gosh I LOVE this series! This is the second book in the Dirty Angels MC series and as much as I liked Zak’s book, and I really, really liked Zak’s book, I think I like Jag’s even better. Jag is a total trip, the man is super sexy and annoyingly alpha, but he’s also sweet and hilariously funny when it comes to Ivy…she definitely pushes ALL his buttons.”

 Blurb:

Welcome to Shadow Valley where the Dirty Angels MC rules. Get ready to get Down & Dirty because this is Jag’s story…

The only thing Jag, DAMC Road Captain, loves more than his custom bike is Ivy. He’s wanted her ever since he could remember. However, through the years, he’s had to watch her date anyone but him since she avoids dating bikers like the plague. Instead, she gravitates toward the complete opposite: geeks and nerds. Something Jag will never be.

Smart and independent, Ivy wants to be the property of no man. Growing up in the club, she knows firsthand how they treat women. She regrets the mistake she made by dragging Jag upstairs to his room at the club one drunken night. Ever since then, she’s been doing her best to keep him at arm’s length, though it’s proven difficult. Especially when she finds out his secret, which only endears her to him even more.

Between secrets, lies, and a violent tangle with a rival club, can these two passionate hot-heads find the love and solace they’re looking for in each other’s arms? Or will everything just tumble down around them?

Note: This book can be read as a standalone. It includes lots of steamy scenes, biker slang, cursing, some violence and, of course, an HEA. If you like alpha males who like to take charge, this book is for you.

Excerpt:

He was going to kill the bitch.

Jag pounded on the door. Again.

She was pushing him to his limit. And that was not good.

For him.

For her.

For the human race in general.

“Fuckin’ open the door or I’ll bust the fuckin’ thing in, got me?”

He was going to knock politely only one more time, then that was it.

He politely kicked the door with his heavy biker boot. That was going to leave a mark.

“If you don’t open this fuckin’ door right—”

The door jerked open and something—or someone—tried to fly by him.

Jag reached out a hand and snagged the fleeing body. With a grip around a skinny bicep, the guy came to a screeching halt.

Jag flung him around to face him. He scowled. “Who the fuck are you?”

The already pale guy turned sheet white. With eyes wide, mouth open, he had a discarded shirt bunched in his fist and his pants hung loosely around his hips, since he apparently hadn’t taken the time to finish fastening them before the man decided to jet.

Which was a smart move. But then, Ivy tended to pick smart dudes. Though, they never hung around long. Geeky dudes and a biker babe don’t mix no matter how many times she tries.

And he got it, he really did. Ivy was smart herself. Genius even. And she needed a challenge.

Other than becoming a biker’s ol’ lady. Or his ol’ lady, more like it.

Jag looked down at the guy’s bare feet. It seemed he forgot his fucking shoes in his haste.

Stupid fuck. Maybe he wasn’t so smart after all.

“You touch Dirty Angels property?”

The guy’s mouth opened and closed like a guppy as he stared up at Jag, who towered over him by at least five inches.

“Asked a damn question. Did you—”

“Get gone, Jag.”

His eyes slid to the woman now standing in the doorway, holding out a pair of loafers with socks tucked into them. The one wearing a fucking robe and probably nothing else.

The guy’s eyes dropped to his offered shoes, then he snagged them and clasped them to his chest as if they were a lifeline.

“Get in the house. Deal with you shortly.”

“The hell you will. Get gone, Jag.”

His head twisted in her direction and he took his time inspecting her from top to toe. That fucking deep red hair of hers spilled around her shoulders, clearly messed up from a fresh fuck, which he hoped he’d interrupted. Because if anyone should be in her bed, it should be him.

Her lips were swollen and pouty. Goddamn, if she had those lips around this nerd’s cock, his brain would explode. Her green eyes snapped in anger.

Whatever. She could be mad all she wanted. He was just as pissed. No, more.

“Who I fuck is none of your damn business,” came out of that smart mouth.

He gritted his teeth before answering. “The fuck it isn’t. Anything to do with DAMC property is my business.”

Especially after she climbed into his bed all those months ago.

“Well, I’m not DAMC property. So GET GONE!”

Jag released the now very scared guy with a shove. He stumbled, caught his balance on the veranda railing, then ran down the metal stairs, taking two at a time. Like a scared mouse, he sprinted toward a car parked on the street.

He should’ve known the guy drove a fucking Prius. He should’ve slashed the geek-mobile’s tires for dipping his dick in DAMC property.

“Fucker doesn’t even ride a bike. You’ve got shit taste in lays, Ivy.”

“Don’t I know it,” she muttered, making Jag’s jaw tighten.

“Don’t come back here,” Jag yelled his warning through the dark to the guy scrambling into his car like his ass was on fire. “If you know what’s good for ya,” he finished under his breath. He turned back to face the pissed-off redhead dressed in black silk that hugged all her damn curves. His balls tightened as hard as his jaw. “Probably needs a dick extension to fuck you.”

“I don’t know if that’s an insult to me or to him. Either way, you don’t belong here, Jag. So, I’ll say it again, get gone.”

“Not leavin’.”

Ivy lifted a shoulder. “Okay then. You’ll be standing out here all night while I’m sleeping soundly in my bed. Thanks to you, alone. Normally, I’d say good night, but… fuck you.”

The door slammed shut and Jag heard the deadbolt click. He grimaced and stared at the door.

Little did she know that her uncle, Ace, had given him the key.

He grinned, turned on his heel and jogged down the steps to where his bike was parked at the foot of the stairway in the pawn shop lot.

She may not let him in, but his mission was accomplished. He chased away Ivy’s latest conquest.

And he’d keep doing it until she got some sense and realized everything she needed has been right in front of her all along.

He put his girl between his legs, hit her starter and closed his eyes for a moment, surrounded by the smooth rumble of his straight exhaust pipes.

His bike was everything to him. The only thing he wanted more between his legs was Ivy.

The only thing he loved more than his bike was… fucking Ivy.

And she was a fucking bitch.

Blurb:

This is the true account of Hansel and Gretel. Forget your silly, misguided tales of two siblings and a house of gingerbread and cakes. This is the story of what happens when love battles against lust. When the yearnings of the heart are forced to wage war against the base needs and desires we all possess. When the time comes to face who we really are. What we truly want. What we need. A Warning: Their story should not be taken lightly, for we all toe the line between human and savage animal. We walk around in the light, hoping others don’t see the depravity lurking within, begging to be let free. So take a deep breath, set up your defenses, and slowly turn the page. I dare you. **This is a dark and extremely explicit retelling of the classic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel. In this novelette, Hansel and Gretel are NOT brother and sister.**

Gretel Teaser

Excerpt:

Gretel’s sleep was troubled, to say the least. She alternated between erotic dreams and consciousness, until she finally sighed in exhausted frustration.

The door opened and she felt a body lay down beside her. Something long and hard pressed against her bottom, and she couldn’t help but wiggle against it.

“Can’t sleep?”

“No. My head is filled with…strange things.”

“Oh really?” a large hand with rough, calloused fingers found its way inside her gown and down to her aching sex. A finger slipped between her lips, gently coaxing her slippery entrance. “What kind of strange things?”

Gretel arched her back as sensation rolled through her body. She’d never been touched there by anyone else, even she had only been brave enough to touch herself on a few occasions, but those didn’t compare to this. “I kept seeing you.” She turned her head to Tristen, and he returned her stare with a dangerous smile.

“What did you see?”

“I can’t say it.”

What did you see?

Gretel whimpered in frustration as he removed his hand from her sex, then ran his fingers, wet from her excitement, over her mouth.

Tell me.

You were inside me. Here. Gretel squeezed her eyes closed and concentrated on her dream. What she’d seen. What she’d heard. What she’d felt. Tristen nodded and as he slowly got to his knees, she realized he wasn’t wearing any clothes. She’d never seen a naked man before, and her mouth watered at the sight of his muscled body and thick, pulsing erection.

Get up.

Gretel got to her knees, just as he was, and waited.

Lift your arms.

She did as instructed, and he grabbed the hem of her gown and lifted it up and over her head. The cool air kissed her naked body, and her nipples hardened in response.

He tilted his head forward and caught one nipple in his mouth, swirling his tongue around the soft peak before closing his lips and sucking. He released it with a pop, then did the same to the other. Bend over.

Excerpt:

A flurry of butterflies brandishes their wings within my stomach. I reread the letter, absorbing every word more than once. I read between the lines and feel the weight of each sentence, the significance of the words spilling from his heart to here . . . on this sun-bleached page.

From pen to paper, Dean depicts his capacity to delve deep into our personalities, our bond, and our fears. Although the world may be rough, our love will always return us to our senses and lead us back to each other.

He’s my best friend, my deepest love. All thoughts of panic flee from my mind, replaced with a great big wave of certainty. My heart rate speeds up, pounding in an erratic rhythm as a burst of excitement spills through me.

The heart knows what the heart knows, and mine knows, no matter what, it will always belong to Dean. He’s my best friend, and he’s happy to be marrying me.

All the nerves that had gathered earlier dissipate. Tears burst forth like water from a dam, spilling down my face. Salty drops fall from my chin, blotch the paper, and create dark splotches on the ink. Dean’s raw emotions—a treasured keepsake to revisit on those stressful chaotic days when I need a reminder to breathe, and, of course, choose love. Something no camera or technology can record.

Slanting my head, I welcome the warmth of the sun’s caress on my face and soak everything in. I listen to my inner voice, leading me to what’s next. Marriage. Motherhood. Warmth fills my chest, my heart, my mind. I am ridiculously, deeply in love with Dean. He knows what makes me feel happy and inspired. I loved him before I knew what love was. This is the forever kind that will continue to survive stupid fights and surpass time.

With renewed energy, I rise to my feet, dust the sand from my yoga pants, then fold the letter and tuck it in the safety of my jacket.

No more words are needed. I’m ready to be Mrs. Morello.

With a smile on my face, I let out a long breath, then head to the Jeep.

It’s not just a love story, it’s an obsession…

Noah:

I’ve loved Bree my whole life. We were each other’s firsts when we were young and inexperienced, and I totally screwed up. I disappointed her, causing her to cry and run away. But over the years, I’ve learned, I’ve perfected, and I’ve dreamt of one day getting another shot with the love of my life.

When I finally get the chance never in my wildest dreams did I think Bree was like this. The girl who used to wear yellow sundresses is no longer Bree, she’s Brianna, my new mistress. I’ll do whatever needed for her forgiveness, even go to my knees and grovel.

However, there’s just one thing… I want Bree back, not Brianna. Once I get Bree, Brianna can do to me what she will.

Bree:

Maybe Noah doesn’t realize it, but he’s been mine ever since we were teens. I tried to apologize for disappointing him our first time, but never got the chance.

Now, when he approaches me at the bar, I can only think about all the things I want to do to him and with him. I plan to show him the skills I’ve honed over the years.

Little does he know what’s in store for him because I know his secrets, his desires, his needs. And I plan on giving it all to him.

However, just when I think I’m in control, he turns my world upside down.

Note: All books in the Obsessed series are standalone novellas. It is intended for audiences over 18 years of age since it includes explicit sexual situations, including BDSM.

Loving Her Teaser 2.jpg

Excerpt:

Noah:

I’ve loved her my whole life. At least since I can remember, which is all the way back to when she was in kindergarten and I was in first grade. I’d chase her through the backyard and around the jungle gym, trying to catch and kiss her.

If I’d succeed, she’d curl her little fingers into a fist, sock me in the gut, then run and tell her mother.

Yep, I had no game.

And, apparently, I didn’t leave an impression. Because now, at thirty, she’s still avoiding me.

Even though she can’t go very far at the moment since I’m her brother’s Best Man, and she’s the Maid of Honor.

Let me tell you, I hate weddings.

I hate them even more when I’m forced to stand across from her and can’t touch her, drag my fingers through her long, dark hair and run my lips along her delicate neck.

The only time I can touch her is when I escort her up the aisle. I’ve done it twice so far. However, she won’t meet my eyes, she feels stiff on my arm and she’s hardly said two words to me. And now I stand here while the wedding planner drones on and on about what’s expected of us during the ceremony tomorrow.

Yawn.

Look, Ms. Wedding Planner, it’s easy. Put one foot in front of the other, walk (without tripping) up the center aisle (can’t get lost while staying in between the rows of pews and aim for the front of the church), then stand to the side (no picking noses, asses, or adjusting your junk).

Simple.

Oh, and don’t pass out. Otherwise, the video will go viral across cyberspace.

One more thing… the rings. Can’t forget to put the rings in my tux pocket.

Got it.

Yawn again.

It isn’t as if I’m not happy for my buddy, getting married to a great woman (although, not quite as stunning as his sister) who makes him happy, but I’m not thrilled with being a part of it. But I have his back. And I’d love to have his sister on her back.

Again. But in better circumstances.

We lost our virginity together at seventeen in her parents’ pool shed. I was in love with her then, too. Her with me? Not so much.

And in those forty-five seconds of bliss, I fell in love with her even more. I don’t think she thought it was even close to bliss, though. In fact, she had run out of the shed crying while pulling down her sweet yellow sundress.

I was devastated, and that was a major blow to my seventeen-year-old ego.

I’ll admit it, I had a lot to learn.

However, I had to learn it elsewhere since she was no longer game. In fact, she avoided me (just like at this rehearsal).

But I did learn. I was determined to improve, to not make her cry next time. But, unfortunately, there never was a next time.

Eventually, Mrs. Callahan down the street was kind enough to take me under her wing. Teach me the ins and outs of women. Of pleasure. Of discovering what I wanted and what I wanted to give in return.

Mrs. Callahan.

Yeah.

She made me call her that, too. And I did (when I wasn’t calling her Mistress).

I learned.

I perfected.

I dreamt of one day getting another shot with the love of my life.

Now here we stand, across from each other. My eyes on her. Her eyes on everything but me.

I want her.

I need her.

Still.

Even after all these years.

As I stand across from her, I’m mesmerized by her unforgettable, stunning beauty.

I love her.

But I can’t have her.

And that fucking blows.

Excerpt

“A what?”

Against the din of the ancient window air conditioner chugging into the room, Madison’s voice had a tinny, almost petulant sound. But of all the things she had expected from the impromptu meeting with some family estate lawyer she’d never heard of, this wasn’t it.

“A ranch, Ms. Hollis,” Mr. Sidney replied, the tone of his voice indicating that he’d picked up on her confusion and ensuing frustration with the afternoon’s events and that, frankly, he didn’t care. “The Triple Diamond Ranch in Wolf Creek, Montana, to be exact.”

Madison rubbed her hands over her face and tried to make sense of everything. Mr. Sidney had contacted her a week prior about a will left to her by some uncle on her mother’s side, an uncle she’d never heard of, from a mother who’d been gone some eighteen years now. She took a deep breath, trying a different tack.

“Are you certain this is my uncle”—she glanced at the stack of legal documents two inches thick on the desk before her—“Mason?”

Mr. Sidney peered down at her over the wire rim of his thin glasses—a remarkable feat, given that she had at least two inches on the man, who sat short and boney in the chair across the desk.

“Mr. Mason Westerly King first arranged this inheritance with Sidney and Sidney nearly two decades ago,” he replied. “We’ve had ample time to determine and confirm your identity, Ms. Hollis.”

Madison resisted the urge to roll her eyes, but only just. Mr. Sidney’s attitude came on the tail of what had already been the week from hell. She sighed, her heavy breath spilling out of her mouth like a deflating hot air balloon. It’s only Wednesday.

“Mr. Sidney, I’m afraid I still don’t quite understand. What am I supposed to do with a ranch”—she gestured with her hand—“I don’t know, eight, ten hours away from here?”

He gave a slow blink. “My advice, Ms. Hollis, is to go inspect the ranch yourself. You have all the information on the mineral rights and past financial records. Once you get the lay of the land, you can determine whether you wish to sell or keep the property. But otherwise, after I get your signature on these forms, I’m afraid there’s not much else I can help you with.”

Madison did scowl that time, but with her head bent over the stack of papers while signing the requisite lines, he couldn’t see it. She was perfectly pleased to be done with Mr. Sidney for good, but he was wrong about one major thing. She wasn’t going to decide whether or not to keep the ranch—she had decided the very first time he had mentioned the word inheritance. No, the second she got out to Montana, she would sell the damn thing and be done with it. Maybe then everything would go back to normal. Ha. Yeah, right

Author Interview

1.      Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’d love to! I’ve been a writer and storyteller for as long as I can remember. I come from a writing family and the supportive, creative environment pushed me toward a career writing – not that I had a choice! I have a degree in journalism because writing is something that I’ve always known I have to do and I’m lucky for the chance! As a writer, I love all sorts of things, travel, classic cars, art history, and yoga. It’s always so much fun to learn about new things and the world around me.

2.      What do you do when you are not writing?

I love to bake. It’s a really big problem, since I’m a full-butter and full-sugar type baker, so I’d add running and yoga to the list of other favored activities to burn off all the muffins and cookies. I also love classic cars, art history, travel and modern feminist lit.

3.        When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

I’ve been writing for as long as I can possibly remember. Writing is an intrinsic part of me, and even before I understood what that meant, I told stories and made up tall tales. As for my first book, I actually pitched Harlequin my freshman year of college, back when they were still taking queries in the mail, which is pretty amazing. They sent back a personalized rejection letter filled with great suggestions and that just inspired me to keep going. I started self-publishing senior year of college, and then the indie presses and series all developed from there.

4.      How did you choose the genre you write in?

Romance has been a favored genre for a long time. I would fill my library bag up with first YA sweet romances, then the cowboys and regency – older stuff, because that’s the option that I had. When I discovered just how huge the romance industry was, my world expanded a lot. At the time, I was already writing romance stories and a lot of Fan Fiction, which was a really natural stepping stone into romance and erotic romance. The deeper I got into it, the more I realized that romance is a progressive, women-centric, feminist genre, and that just made me love it all the more.

5.      Where do you get your ideas?

The ideas come from everywhere! There’s this gorgeous manor house in my town that I pass walking to the park with the little girl I nanny, and I developed a full series just from that house alone. I tend to write in series, which makes the world building more concrete and the second or third stories are often natural progressions from the first. At the moment, I have too many ideas and not enough time to write them all! (Good problem to have, I know.)

6.      Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I’m a plotter, I have to be. For one, I’m working on a lot of projects at once, and if I don’t have the info written down and organized, then I make mistakes. I also tend to over write, and if I do that without a plot then the first draft comes out fluffy and direction-less. Starting with a plot and character interviews, though all that original planning may change, is a great way for me to stay focused and on track in the long run. I wrote one story without an outline and I have no doubt it would have been significantly better with one.

7.      Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

She’s actually fantasy, not romance, but Juliette Marillier has had a huge influence on my life, especially pertaining to the way she writes her heroines. It’s really important to me that my women are unique and flawed individuals, because women are all different and I strive to write real women, not perfect women. Juliette writes characters that save the day both by working within the confines of expected feminine behavior and outside of them. I’ve learned so, so much from her.

8.      Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

I’d love to! The Lovin’ is Easy is a male/female/male menage romance set on a ranch in Montana. My heroine, Madison, is a city girl from San Francisco who inherits the Triple Diamond ranch and wants nothing to do with it, until she meets the two hot cowboy ranch managers, Christian and Ryder. It originally started as a short story for an anthology request, but my editor thought that it would make a great series, so I got the chance to explore the characters and their relationship more as I made the book longer, and I think the story definitely benefited from it!

9.      Will you have a new book coming out soon?

Yes! Leather and Gold is a historical BDSM novel coming out in October, part of the At My Lady’s Pleasure series. I love switching back and forth between historical and contemporary because they pose different, exciting challenges. Writing something as outside the box as BDSM in an era when the rules were so strict and controlling makes it, I feel, all the more erotic and decadent. Plus, I love a duchess who takes what she wants.

10.  Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?

There’s two major pieces of advice I have for new authors. The obvious one, and you’ll hear this a lot, is read and write. All the time. Reading and writing are the only ways to become a better author. Read everything. Write all the time. Otherwise you don’t get to call yourself a writer. The other piece of advice is something I wish I’d been told back in the beginning – treat your writing like a business. Think about your hours and expenses and your times. Organize and plan. Stay on top of everything and always deliver what you promise. When writing is a hobby and not a job, you can do what you want, but when you make the change to writing as a career, there’s a lot more pressure and that’s something to be aware of.

VICE by Rosanna Leo Release Blitz

Title: VICE
Series: Vegas Sins #1
Author: Rosanna Leo
Genre: Hot Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Crave Publishing
Release Date: September 19, 2017

Casinos, gambling, money, and women, these are all the things Las Vegas has to offer. For a handsome business entrepreneur it’s paradise.

Wearing success like a well-tailored suit, Liam Doyle knows exactly how to lure customers into his grand casino hotels. Every night it’s business as usual while he runs his multi-million dollar empire…until a pesky protester catches his attention.

Staging a one-woman protest, Kate Callender has the potential to be a huge pain in his ass. If he doesn’t take care of her soon, there will be bad publicity slapped all over Vice, the newest addition to his chain of casinos.

But there’s just one tiny little problem Liam didn’t count on—the feisty red-head isn’t about to go down easily. She’s fighting him every step of the way…and he’s starting to like it.

“You,” she said on a breath.“Me.” His enticing blue eyes traveled up and down the length of her, one eyebrow raised in frank admiration. “You obviously didn’t do your homework.”

Outrage surged through her system. “Why didn’t you tell me who you were yesterday? Why did you let me embarrass myself like that?”

The smirk disappeared, to be replaced by a mild expression of boredom. “There’s no need to be embarrassed. I always try to size up the competition.”

Doyle walked toward her, his large hand extended. The light in his eyes now hinted not so much at merriment as it did danger. She caught a whiff of her favorite men’s cologne by Michael Kors. She’d bought it for an old boyfriend once, but it smelled way better on Liam, as if it were an extension of his persona.

His entire ensemble, designer suit, pressed pants, and navy blue paisley tie, reeked of power and privilege that drew her like a moth to a flame. Damn, she’d always been a sucker for a man in a good suit. Get a hold of yourself, Kate. He’s hot, but so is the Devil.

He kept his hand out. “Please allow me to introduce myself properly. I’m Liam Doyle.” His gaze drifted toward her neckline and back up again. “I think you’ve heard of me.”

Wishing she didn’t have to, she took his hand. Electricity shot through her and that damned perspiration appeared on her upper lip again. His grip was that of a man who took what he wanted, when he wanted.

She held her head high. “Kate Callender.”

He held her hand for a moment, his gaze locked on hers. He then gestured toward the counter, where a teak tray was laden with biscuits and what smelled like expensive coffee. No Folgers crystals for this guy. “Coffee?”

“No, thank you.”

“Tea?”

“No.”

“So we’re done with the niceties, then?”

“I didn’t come here for niceties.”

“Then you’ve come to the right place.” Liam sat on one of the couches, motioning for her to do the same. She continued to stand. Something in his wolf-like gaze hardened even further. “Ms. Callender, why are you picketing my casino?”

His direct question set her even more on edge. She cleared her throat. “I have a right to protest what I see as wrong.”

His grim smile might have made a grown man sweat, but she didn’t look away. “Let me put this another way. Las Vegas is home to numerous casinos. Why mine?”

“If I’m trying to make a point, it only stands to reason I’d pick the most popular casino. I suppose I should congratulate you. Only open for two days, and Vice is already a hit. You must be so proud.”

“Yes. Despite having my grand opening spoiled.”

“Oh.” She inclined her head in mock sympathy. “I’m so not sorry.”

He peered at her, narrowing his eyes. “Are you a Bible-thumper?”

“No.”

“Campaigning politician?

Despite her unease, she laughed. “Do I look like Hilary Clinton?”

He looked her up and down, as if her vocation were scrawled somewhere on her and he simply needed to find it. “Aspiring actress? This is probably a publicity stunt to get you viral on YouTube? Trying to get an audition here as a showgirl? Sorry, I don’t use them. The whole concept is dated and demeaning to my female clientele.”

Okay, he got some points for that statement. “I’m not a dancer. I’m a singer.”

It was his turn to laugh. Despite the bitter tone, his deep timber called to her. “Same difference.” He stood. “I’m not auditioning you, Ms. Callender, as fun as it would be to get you on the casting couch.” And there he lost those points again. “Have a nice day.”

“Wait! I’m not trying to get an audition. You need to listen to me.” In a nervous reaction, she fingered the pearl choker at her neck, the one thing she had left of her mother. The one thing her father hadn’t pawned.

Doyle turned back to her, one brow raised. “No, I don’t.” He eyed how she gripped her choker. “So you can take your fake pearl necklace and your sneakers and your attitude and go home.”

Her attitude? “No. You let me up here. I’m not leaving until you hear me out.” She let go of the choker and let her hands fall to her sides. “And my pearls aren’t fake.”

“Why are you here, Ms. Callender? Did you lose money at one of my casinos on your last night out with the girls?”

She didn’t want to dignify that with a response, but a smug statement like that couldn’t go unchallenged. “I’m not a gambler.”

He leaned against the armrest of the cushy couch and surveyed her through hooded eyes. “Ah, and now we come to the crux of the matter. So, you’re a do-gooder. Let me guess. Gam-Anon?”

“New Horizons.”

“Never heard of them.”

“That doesn’t mean we don’t exist. And unfortunately, there are lots of us. Far too many. What does that tell you, Mr. Doyle?”

Liam’s lips twitched into a smile that appeared slightly more friendly than his poker face, as if he enjoyed their banter. He loosened his tie, but his focused gaze continued to grate on her nerves. She stared at the strip of indigo silk at his throat, and was struck by a bizarre and unbidden image.

Her, on his bed. Her hands bound with his expensive tie.

The strange pounding in her head must have been her racing heart. Where did that come from? Focus, Kate, focus.

“I’m not just here because it’s something I believe in. I’m here because my group gets bigger every goddamn week,” she said, concentrating on the task at hand, rather than Liam Doyle’s bed. Lisa’s sad face appeared in her mind, as well as those of her children, the ones who’d spent the last two nights crying for their daddy. Kate blinked away the tears which threatened and aimed her burning gaze at Doyle. “I don’t respect your work, Mr. Doyle. And I don’t respect you.”

From the furrow of his brow, Kate thought she’d struck a nerve. His tanned skin seemed paler. After a moment, he said, “So you’re trying to take down my casino with a one-woman picket line? No offense, but I’ve seen better protests at a garage sale.”

“I’m trying to create awareness.” Kate stood, having already had enough of their uncomfortable conversation. “I’m not a fool. My intention is not to shut down Las Vegas, or your casino. That’ll never happen. But if I can make a small dent in the wallet of the Strip’s wealthiest hustler during his opening week, then maybe people will take notice. Have you never thought about the addictions riding your customers? Have you ever spent time chatting with the compulsive gamblers downstairs? Because I bet you’d hear a lot of stories. And believe me, the worst ones are the ones they don’t tell.” She paused for breath. “My friend’s husband is probably down there right now, feeding your slot machines instead of his kids.”

“Hold on. Don’t pin that on me.”

“Oh? Who do I pin it on?”

“Look, if you want a donation, I already make plenty. Believe me, I make regular donations to people like Gam-Anon. You know, legitimate charities.”

“I’m not here for money, but clearly you are.” The words spilled out of her, kick-started by adrenaline. “You’re a wealthy man. Did you have to open casinos? Were they such a passion for you? Couldn’t you have opened, I don’t know, a supermarket chain instead? Or was that not sexy enough for the great Liam Doyle?”

His lips compressed. Had her comment hit home? Good.

“You have no right…”

“I have every right.” Her face was burning now. “If I can save even a few lost souls from places like this, then I’ll sleep a whole lot easier.”

She had to get out before she started crying. She wanted to leave with her head held high. Leave him thinking. She turned and headed for the elevator, but he grabbed her hand before she could get away.

“Wait.”

Kate yanked her hand out of his grip. “How do you even sleep, Mr. Doyle?”

His eyes bored into her. “Like a rock. But that crown of thorns must keep you up at night.”

She tried to appear like she was still in control, but that had hurt. “You just keep telling yourself that.”

Kate marched to the elevator and punched the button. As the door opened, she threw a look back at him.

“By the way, I will be back. I’ll show you how many lives have been devastated by your casinos.” She walked into the lift, even though she felt like running. She didn’t look back.

Liam called out to her. “Watch your step, Ms. Callender. I don’t forgive and forget.”

She channeled her last ounce of bravado before the doors shut. “You really should see someone for that. I hear being an asshole can be terminal.”

Once the elevator began its descent, Kate leaned against the back of the small space and closed her eyes, winded by her hostile exchange with Doyle. She didn’t open them again until the door opened.
